Herbs for Weight Loss

Many different herbs have been used throughout time as weight loss remedies. Alfalfa, corn silk, dandelion, juniper, yarrow, parsley, and uva ursi are commonly known for their diurectic properties and have been used in tablet and tea form.

Green tea, cayenne, cinnamon, and guarana have long been known as thermogenic herbs, making your metabolic rate boost slightly, while bladderwrack and hawthorn berry boosts adrenal glands and improves thyroid function.

Certain herbs can actually trick the body into thinking that they’re full and suppress the appetite while the herb speeds up the body’s metabolism. Others, like buchu and uva-ursi, remove excess fluid from your body but only as long as the herb is taken regularly. If stopped suddenly, the weight will return quickly.

Cayenne, which brings your metabolism up at a healthy level, is just one of those. Some other safe herbs that can help you lose weight are:

Gallium aperine, a plant that grows wild in many parts of the world, was traditionally used as a lymphatic cleanser and a diuretic. It helps to clear toxins from the body, clear skin and rid the body of other conditions that are caused by toxins built up in the body.

Garcinia cambogia has been incorporated for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine as a natural appetite suppressant but has only lately gotten tons of media attention as a weight loss supplement.

Garcinia cambogia acts as a natural weight loss remedy because it inhibits fat storage, or lipogenesis, causes the appetite to be suppressed, boosts metabolism, and lowers glycogen production in the liver. It seems to stamp down the enzyme that turns carbohydrates into fat.

Yoga & Ayurveda

Yoga and Ayurveda are two “sister” practices that originated in India thousands of years ago. Now, a lot of us are familiar with yoga, and have experienced firsthand—through postures, breathwork, and self-inquiry—its profound benefits. Yet many of us are not as familiar with Ayurveda. We might have heard about it in conjunction with yoga, but are not quite sure how, exactly. In her R&R retreat workshop Yoga and Ayurveda, Senior Kripalu Yoga teacher Jurian Hughes points out that yoga means union in Sanskrit, and a definition of Ayurveda is the wisdom of life. Explored together, these complementary practices can offer us transformative tools that foster greater health and vitality.  And as Jurian also explains, integrating Ayurvedic principles into your yoga practice can create a deeper, richer experience on the mat that you can take with you off the mat as well.
“Ayurveda isn’t a one-size-fits-all philosophy,” Jurian says. “We’re constantly in flux throughout the day: our energy level and our mood, for example, are different first thing in the morning than they are at noon.” Ayurveda, then, is a personalized, intuitive health philosophy. According to Ayurvedic principles, each of us has a unique constitution governed by our physical and emotional makeup, as well as our lifestyle—the foods we eat, what time we go to sleep. These constitutions are called doshas, and they are linked to the elements. The doshas are vata (air and ether), pitta (fire and water), and kapha (earth and water).

Physiological Effects of Sleep

Ayurveda places huge importance on getting enough sleep on a daily basis. Free e-booklet gives a good overview of the classical ayurvedic view of sleep. One of the less appreciated functions of sleep is the cleansing effect is has on the body’s tissues. According to ayurveda, vyana vayu (the aspect of vata responsible for circulation of all kinds) becomes more active in helping to collect wastes from our tissues and vital organs. This happens particularly between 2 and 6 am.
Some recent research showing that the brain actually shrinks during sleep, and that the intracellular space increases. They have even discovered that the brain has its own special lymphatic system called the glymphatic system. While the theory is yet to be tested, speculation suggests that the brain uses sleep to help flush out wastes that accumulate during the day while it is busy in computation mode.
